Beet The System ShirtBlack Sheep Heap is a small, progressive design house focusing on projects that promote sustainability, laughter, and social justice.

We do custom graphic creation and screenprinting, as well as producing our own line of hand-printed organic apparel and recycled bags, using water-based, non-toxic inks. All of our packaging is made from 100% post-consumer recycled paper.

In addition to designing the ever-growing Black Sheep Heap line, founder Jen P. Harris has partnered with NYC non-profit Just Food (which works to develop a just and sustainable food system in the city) to create a series of shirts to raise awareness about that organization and its initiatives. Other partners include Brooklyn Victory Garden and the Brooklyn Zen Center.

Green Business SealAs of December 2010, Black Sheep Heap is an Approved member of the Green Business Network, a distinguished and celebrated group of companies that use their products and services as a vehicle for social and environmental change. We are proud to earn this Seal of Approval, which is one of the most respected and recognized symbols in the green marketplace.

You can find Black Sheep Heap stuff on the streets of New York City, in quirky small boutiques and on Etsy: your place to buy and sell all things handmade.

ABOUT JEN P. HARRIS

Jen's first designs were inspired by a trip to India, and by subsequent conversations she had with friends interested in environmental activism. The AVANT-GARDENER and BEET THE SYSTEM designs grew directly out of discussions with a particular friend, an eccentric coffee-fanatic who now runs her own community-oriented café (Trouble Coffee) in San Francisco. She looked at a lot of Russian avant-garde posters when creating those graphics. These days she spend a lot of time painting, and her life-long interest in color has seeped into her design work.

Jen studied Art at Yale University; Queens College CUNY; and in Italy, at the International School of Art in Umbria. She has lived, worked, exhibited and taught in Baltimore, Los Angeles, Italy, India and New York. Check out Jen's paintings and drawings at jenpharris.com.
